Now a days getting your mobile number or social status is not a big problem for anyone since we are all active on various social media websites and we share information, but what happens when you receive a random call from an unknown number who informs you that your friend has taken a big loan from bank and is not repaying and as he has mentioned your name as someone he knows, it is now your responsibility to bring your friend to the bank to repay the debt or you pay for him. You will suddenly be broken and some people may have a mild heart attack too..

But hey, your friend has taken a loan and not you, so you are not liable to pay it and neither an agency or bank can threaten you to pay back for someone else. So do not be in a hurry to jump in and pay back.

Read what is more important. First thing is that you have not taken a loan and neither you have given the bank any writen document to give a loan to someone so you are safe. Some people however can threaten you by saying that your mobile number is there and bank has the proof that you have agreed to knowing him. This is all Bullshit... do not give an ear to this. Unless someone has your approval in form of your signature in any official document, you can not be termed as guilty and so do not panic.

Secondly, If someone calls you and tells that your friend has taken a loan and you are known to him, simply deny your association with your friend and hang up the phone.

Thirdly, you can record the call from the caller and in the mean while ask him for his identity, designation, post, bank, branch, etc. And then hang up the phone and hand over the recorded data to the nearest police station and they will take necessary action. I hope you are aware that there is a cyber crime cell working in most cities now in police department, they can help you.

Fourthly, if you know the number from which the call is coming you can blacklist that number / block it permanently on your mobile and you will never receive another call from the same number.

If you still are in doubt, you can simply go to the nearest police station and give a writen complaint that someone is harrasing you verbally over phone and give the details and hopefully they will nab the culprit and take necessary action.

We are living in an era of information sharing and we can not hide our information no matter how much we try, so please be sure you do not PANIC. Because your panic is their price. Do not be a fool, maintain your cool...

Fraud Calls asking to repay your friend's loan

The persons calling you as a bigger plan may have more information about you than you think. They may have your bank account number and your identity etc. They usually make a call and repeatedly call you till you break down and ask them for a way out and they will tell you to remove your number from the loan account of the bank.

A sensible man would almost say him to do it and then the fellow will tell that since your identity is tagged to a loan fraudster, your number can not be removed untill your friend appears in person in the bank and ask for the same. And then quickly he will add, otherwise you can make an affidavit that you do not know your friend and submit it to the bank and your number will be removed.

You now feel somewhat relieved but then an affidavit ? Who will do it and where and you ask the same to the scamster and he will inform you that you must get it done through a bank lawyer and he will quickly provide you with the number and details of a (fraud) lawyer.

His job is not over yet, as he will be keeping an eye on your activity. If you did not call to the lawyer immediately, he will keep calling you and bothering you till you finally decide to make a call and then...

You call the lawyer and the fellow in his true professional favor will tell you the same thing, that if your friend does not appear in bank to repay he will be jailed and also you and he will use his words to threaten you too. When he is done and you plead for a way out he will ask you to pay a hefty amount to get your number removed from the bank loan account. Usually these people demand for money between 5-10 thousand only.

And feeling helpless you may pay the amount too, and they will ask you to deposit the amount through western union or some such method and mostly will not receive it on any account. And that such transfers they will demand on friday and saturdays only.

This is how you lose money to these people, who you have never met.

Be ware and do not pay a single pie to anyone. If someone threatens you what you can do ?

Fraud calls asking to repay your friend's loan

  • One evening while I was busy in something I received a call from an unknown number and the fellow straightway asked me about Mr X, one of my friends and when I acknowledged that I know him he asked me about his fathers name and address and his whereabouts. I asked about his own identity and he informed that he is calling from HDFC bank and also said that my friend has taken a loan from bank and is not repaying back. On asking how he got my number he told me that my friend has cited me as a refree for taking the loan. I was surprised, because I did never receive any call from HDFC bank regarding any loan my friend might have taken and when I said the same to him he informed that the bank had called me and I had affirmed about him being a neighbor of mine. Now the fellow who was talking in not a very familiar way and was using absurd and foul language told me to inform this to my friend Mr X and also told me that  I must tell my friend to take my number off from the bank records or else he will be calling me again and again till my friend Mr X pays the loan back to the bank.

Taken aback by this event I called my friend immediately and he said, he has not taken any loan from any bank, and informed me that these are prank calls which I must not entertain and so I did not receive the calls again.

After almost a week I again received call from another number and this time too the man was rude and was abusing on phone and the way he talked was very cheap, but I was ready this time and recorded what he was telling me.

Now I disconnected the phone saying that I am not the person who has taken a loan and I do not know about the whereabouts of my friend. The man however did not identify himself completely and did not even give his own identity on asking and so I was sceptical about all this.

After that the man called me for not less than ten times and I did not pick up the call. This is definitely not a welcome call, but it is highly irritating and time wasting call. When I enquired some of my colleagues also said to have had similar calls and on google I found out a whole lot of people complaining about such hoax calls.

Please be aware, this may be part of a bigger plot to cough out money from your pocket. Never contact such people. How do they take your money ?

I was not irritated neither I was worried while I had talks with this fellow, but yes it wasted much of my time and so I decided that I will not received his calls.

In western continent if anyone calls you to collect loan from someone who is not you and he does call u more than once you can simply file a case against the agency for damages, and in India I am not aware of any such laws which can bar someone from making you harassing calls. I would request my lawyer friends to please intervene and suggest if any of such laws exist and how does someone go about applying the same law to get rid of the harassment.
